The English name of talc powder is PULVISTALCI. Its main composition is magnesium silicate with talc and water. Chemical formula is Mg3[Si4O4] (OH)2. Its main composition is: SiO2 60%, MgO 30%, and degree of whiteness is 93%. Talc is monoclinic system. Crystalline appears false hexagonal or diamond schistose. Talc often appears dense lump, foliated, radial, and fibrous aggregate. Talc is colorless and transparent or white; when it contains a small amount of impurities, it appears light green, light yellow, light brown and even light red. It appears pearl luster on its cleavage surface. Its hardness is 1. Its proportion is 2.7-2.8.
Talc has good physical and chemical properties: it has lubricity, sticky resistance, flow-aiding, fire resistance, acidoresistance, insulativity, high melting point, chemical inactivity, good covering power, softness, good gloss, strong absorption and so on. The crystalline structure of talc is layered, thus it has the tendency to split into scales and special smoothness. When its content of Fe2O3 is high, its insulativity will become low.
Talc is soft, and its Moh’s hardness is 1-1.5, slippery feeling. {001} perfect cleavage, easily split into thin slices, natural repose angle is small (35°-40°), unstable, its surrounding rocks are silicified and talc magnesite, magnesite ore, low grade ore or dolomitic marble. Except minority is moderately stable, most of them are unstable. The joint, fracture development, the physical and mechanical property of the ore and surrounding rock have importance to the mining technology.
Chemical grade use: used as strengthened modified filling agent in chemical industry, such as rubber, plastics, painting. Features: increase the stability of the product shape, increase tensile strength, shearing strength, crooked intensity and pressure intensity, reduce deformation, elongation and coefficient of thermal expansion, high whiteness, epigranular, strong dispersion and so on.
Ceramics grade use: used for making high-frequency ceramics, wireless electric porcelain, and various kinds of industrial ceramics, architectural ceramics, daily ceramics and ceramic glaze. Features: non-discoloring under high temperature, whiteness enhancing after roasting, uniform density, good gloss, and smooth surface.
Cosmetics grade use: it is good filler in cosmetics industry. Features: it contains large quantity of silicon, and it can block infrared, thus it can enhance the performance of the sunblock and anti-infrared of the cosmetics.
Medical and food grade use: used as additive of pharmaceutical and food. Features: non-toxic, tasteless, high whiteness, good solubility, strong gloss, soft, strong smoothness. PH value is 7-9, it will not degrade the characteristics of the product.
Paper-making grade use: used in various grades of paper. Features: it has high whiteness, stable particle size, low abrasion degree and so on. The paper used by this kind of power is smooth and fine; it can save raw material, and increase the life of the grease net.
