Opal is mainly divided into two categories, one kind is what we call gem opal also named ¡°Ou Po¡±, multicolored; smooth surface; some of them is transparent like water, and some are like egg white. Another kind is light shale opal, also called opoka or diatomite, and it is a kind of rare mineral. It¡¯s a kind of Nen River light shale opal composed of christobalite, tridymite and opal. The light shale is named for its light weight, and its scientific name is opal. Shale contains rich gills fresh water biological fossil, and its main component is SiO2, with small density, low hardness and variable granularity distribution. Light shale opal is layered, fibrous, and porous nanostructures. At present, it is found in Great Khingan in Heilongjiang Province, Nenjiang River basin, Inner Mongolia, Szechwan, Yunnan and other places.
The main functions of light shale opal: permeability and warm keeping of textile, ABS resin mobility improvement, inflaming retarding, filtration treatment, strong water absorption and good adsorption. And it can absorb chloride, nitrite, prussiate, PB, Hg, As and other harmful substances or elements, and it has good performance of decoloration and bleach.
